The collection of English cast metal vessels, formed by Roderick and Valentine Butler and recently acquired by Taunton Museum, is the finest such collection ever assembled. It ranges in date from the later Middle Ages to the 18th century. The Butlers' study of their collection has led them to identify the output of a number of foundries, prominent among which were producers in rural Somerset.
