The Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology

The SPMA was founded in 1966 with the aim of promoting the archaeology of late medieval to industrial society in Britain, Europe and those countries influenced by European colonialism. The Society now covers the archaeology of the period up to the present day. To achieve this aim the Society publishes the biannual journal Post-Medieval Archaeology, and a twice yearly newsletter, as well as regular monographs, and holds conferences and meetings.

Recent Society conferences have focused on 'Ireland and Britain in the Atlantic World' (2004), Caribbean historical archaeology (2005), and ‘Italy and Britain between Mediterranean and Atlantic worlds’ (2006). For further details, see our 'Events' section.

The Society's last AGM was held in September, 2007 in Exeter during the Society's West Country Households c.1550-1700 conference. The 2008 AGM will be held in Norwich at the Society’s Post-Medieval Religion conference. Further details are provided in the Events section of the website.

SPMA Forthcoming Conference:

Crossing Paths or Sharing Tracks?
Future Directions for the Archaeological
Study of post-1550 Britain and Ireland.
April 2008, Leicester

The conference aims to bring together representatives from the Society for Post Medieval Archaeology, the Association for Industrial Archaeology, the Contemporary Historical Archaeology and Theory list, the Irish Post-Medieval Archaeology Group, and the Industrial Heritage Association of Ireland to consider the commonalties between approaches as well as the unique contributions made by members of each organisation towards the study of the material heritage of the post-1550 period. Through this discussion-focused conference, we hope to foster enhanced understanding and cooperation between the organisations and their approaches, with in-depth consideration of the future of the broader field of historical archaeology.
