The Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology

SPMA seeks new members of Council

Monday 17 August 2020

SPMA has number of vacancies on its Council to start in December 2020:

  • President
  • Vice-President
  • Three Ordinary Members of Council
  • Assistant Treasurer
  • Assistant Secretary

SPMA is keen to welcome more Black, Asian and minority ethnic members to Council, recognising the full diversity of people researching, practicing, and otherwise interested in, the archaeology and heritage of the last 500 years in Britain and around the world.

We also want to have a strong balance on Council between different sectors and interest groups in the discipline, such as academics, community archaeology groups, museum professionals, members of heritage organisations, and commercial archaeologists.

The Secretary, Emma Dwyer, and Treasurer, Kerry Massheder-Rigby, will be standing down from their respective roles in December 2021. As a consequence we are also seeking an Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer to shadow and assist Emma and Kerry in their roles, with a view to taking over the Secretary and Treasurer roles in December 2021.

SPMA Council carries out much of its business during quarterly Council meetings, which we are currently undertaking remotely. When travel is required for society business, reasonable travel expenses are reimbursed. As the Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology is a registered charity, the Members of Council are its trustees; they ensure that the charity is running well and does what it was set up to do. You can find out more about being a charity trustee on the Charity Commission website.

If you would like to find out more about Council roles and what is involved, email Emma Dwyer at

In order to consider potential applicants for Council nominations, please provide a summary of your qualifications/professional background and experience, and what you feel you could bring to the role. Please send this statement to the SPMA’s Secretary at by Monday 5th October 2020. All of the candidates will be considered by Council and we will make a recommendation of our preferred candidates to the AGM (date to be confirmed, but will be held online). Any SPMA member can also put themsleves up for election at the AGM, by submitting a nomination to the Secretary 21 days in advance of the meeting.
