Paul Courtney Student Travel Award

The Paul Courtney Student Travel Award has been established to enable student members of the SPMA to participate in European conferences - a particular enthusiasm of our late Membership Secretary and joint Editor of Post-Medieval Archaeology, Paul Courtney. The purpose of the award is to enable students of archaeology to travel abroad (outside their countries of residence and registered study) to gain a better understanding of post-medieval archaeology through attendance at conferences. 

The Society will make an annual travel award to enable a student member of the Society to attend a conference on the subject of post-medieval archaeology in a European country. Each award proposal will be subject to a maximum of £200, and the total fund available in a single application round is £200. The award may be split between one or two applicants. Council will not favour presentation at a conference over attendance.  For the purposes of this award the UK and the Republic of Ireland shall be considered as separate regions. There is no restriction on age.

To be eligible for an award applicants must be:

  • A member of the Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology and
  • A registered student undertaking a course in archaeology (either part or full time) in undergraduate or postgraduate study, or other equivalent status, in a European country.

All applicants must provide proof of their student status with their application (i.e. confirmation of registration or a letter from their institution). Student cards will not be accepted.

If selected for an award, payment will be made to the awardee after the conference and on submission of receipts for expenses (registration, travel, accommodation). Awardees will be required to write a short report on their experience at the conference for the Society website and newsletter within three months of the conference. The deadline for receipt of applications is 15 February.

Applicants should complete this form,  outlining the details of the proposed travel, why it would be relevant to your studies, any expected outcomes from attendance, and a breakdown of expected costs.  

Once completed, this form should be submitted to the Society’s Prize Co-ordinator, Hilary Orange at prizes@spma.org.uk along with proof of student status. Successful applicants will be informed by 15th March.
